NCD Cameroon

Hypertension and diabetes screening in communities, with digital follow-up of people identified at risk.

What NCD Cameroon does

NCD Cameroon is SHINE’s programme on non-communicable diseases. Trained staff screen adults for hypertension and diabetes at clinics, churches, markets and workplaces. They record results digitally and explain them on the spot. Anyone with a raised reading is referred to a partner clinic. Then we follow up by telephone or through the MedAccess app. The programme grew out of the 2023 Hypertension Awareness campaign, which reached more than 5,000 people.

Why NCD Cameroon matters

Hypertension and diabetes are among the fastest-growing causes of death and disability in sub-Saharan Africa. However, most people who have them do not know it. Screening close to home, with a clear referral route, changes that at an affordable cost. In addition, every screening day contributes anonymised data to research on hypertension in Cameroon.

NCD Cameroon partners

We deliver the programme with the Ministry of Public Health and local clinics. Clinics can host screening days, and organisations can fund a campaign. Please send a partnership enquiry. Finally, the evidence base is set out in a 2025 review in Heart.

A note on our standards

First, every study has a written protocol and ethical approval before data collection. Second, we report results to the partner as well as to a journal. Third, testimonials appear only with the person’s consent. As a result, partners can rely on what SHINE publishes, and readers can check every claim against its source.
