SHINE works with local clinics to screen for hypertension and diabetes

Hypertension screening is now offered at partner clinics and in communities through SHINE’s NCD Cameroon programme. Diabetes screening runs alongside it. The programme grew out of the 2023 Hypertension Awareness campaign by Sintieh Research Academy, which screened and educated more than 5,000 people.

How hypertension screening works

We hold screening days at partner clinics, churches, markets and workplaces. Trained staff measure blood pressure, blood glucose, weight and height. They record the results digitally and explain them on the spot. Anyone with a raised reading is referred to a partner clinic. Then we follow up by telephone or through the MedAccess app to check that treatment started.

Why hypertension screening matters

Hypertension and diabetes are among the fastest-growing causes of death and disability in sub-Saharan Africa. However, most people who have them do not know it. Screening close to home, with a clear referral route, changes that at an affordable cost. In addition, every screening day contributes anonymised data to research on awareness, treatment and control of hypertension in Cameroon.

Hypertension screening partners

We deliver the programme with the Ministry of Public Health and local clinics. It also draws on our work with the Welisane Foundation and the University of Washington. Clinics that would like to host screening days should write to partner@shineltd.org. Likewise, organisations can fund a campaign in their community.

Research behind our hypertension screening

Our founder, Dr E Sintieh Nchinda Ngek, is lead author of a 2025 scoping review in Heart on mobile health for cardiovascular care in Africa. The review informs how we follow people up. See the publications library for details.

How to reach us

You can write to info@shineltd.org at any time. Alternatively, call +237 680 338 598 during office hours, Monday to Friday. We reply within two working days. In addition, partnership and funding enquiries go to partner@shineltd.org, so that the right person answers. Questions about hypertension screening are welcome.

A note on our standards

First, every study has a written protocol and ethical approval before data collection. Second, we report results to the partner as well as to a journal. Third, testimonials appear only with the person’s consent. As a result, partners can rely on what SHINE publishes, and readers can check every claim against its source.
