University of Washington courses are open for enrolment through Sintieh Research Academy (SRA), the training arm of SHINE. The courses run for twelve weeks online. They are for clinicians, public health officers, programme managers and early-career researchers who want a recognised qualification without leaving their posts.
What the University of Washington courses cover
Two courses are offered in the current cycle. First, project management in health covers planning, budgeting, monitoring and reporting, with tools you apply to your own project. Second, leadership and management in global health covers leading teams, working with ministries and funders, and managing change with limited resources.
Teaching is online, with recorded lectures, weekly live sessions and assessed assignments. Participants who complete the requirements receive a certificate from the University of Washington. Meanwhile, SRA in Buea handles admission, supports participants and hosts study sessions for those nearby.
Why SHINE offers University of Washington courses
SHINE was founded in 2019 to build health research capacity in sub-Saharan Africa. Since then SRA has trained more than 1,000 health professionals in five countries. Its staff and fellows have contributed to more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. The University of Washington courses add recognised management training to that record. As a result, the researchers we train can also run the programmes their evidence informs.
Who should take the University of Washington courses
The courses suit doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, public health graduates and NGO staff. You need a first degree and a role, current or intended, in managing health services. Teaching is in English. In addition, you need a reliable internet connection for the live sessions; SRA can provide study space in Buea.
